Hospitality in Worship

“Your Place in God’s Embrace”

Practicing Hospitality in Worship

at South Grandville CRC

How can a busy five-year old, an 80-year old with hearing loss, a teenager preoccupied with her social life, a cognitively impaired young adult, and a stressed-out, overwhelmed single mother all engage meaningfully in the same worship service? Good question. With so many people coming from so many places, it’s no wonder they’re all looking for something different and it’s no wonder they all come with the same question: “What am I going to get out of this?”

As a multi-generational congregation, South Grandville CRC has reason to celebrate: we have a lot of different people of all different ages with many different gifts! In the next several months, through a series of events that are part of a worship renewal project, South Grandville has the opportunity to affirm and build on this valuable asset.

Some questions to think about:

  • What comes to mind when you think about hospitality?
  •   How does our church welcome...
    • ... children and youth?
    • ... newcomers?
    • ... the physically challenged?
    • ... the cognitively impaired?
    • ... single adults
  •   How can we embrace these individuals more fully in worship?
  •   How can we encourage full and active participation in worship?
  •   How can we encourage a sense of openness in worship so that everyone can use their gifts and every gift is affirmed?
  •   How can we build relationships and strengthen relational connections at South Grandville so that the experience of community spills over into joyful and engaging worship services?
